What Is CHPS?

CHPS provides resources – in many cases, free resources – to schools, school districts, and professionals about all aspects of high performance school design, construction, and operation. CHPS develops tools that help make schools energy, water and material efficient, well-lit, thermally comfortable, acoustically sound, safe, healthy, and easy to operate. These resources include a well-respected six-volume best practices manual, training and conferences, a high performance building rating and recognition program, and other tools for creating healthy, green schools.

On-Demand Webinars:
[Free Webinar] Zero Energy, Zero Carbon & Electrification: Possible and Happening!
[Free Webinar] Calming The School Environment: Creating That Just Right Feeling

1 HSW LU

Zero net energy (ZNE) buildings, commonly referred to as net-zero buildings, are gaining momentum as an emerging green building trend across the world. In this session, we will explore what net zero energy (aka zero net energy) and electrification mean for K12 schools, why these outcomes are important to state energy offices with California taking a lead, and why zero energy is achievable by all schools in all climate zones.

1 HSW LU

In this session, two architects with a long history of designing high performance schools will describe the elements that go into creating a calm environment conducive to student performance and well-being. Speakers will touch on the basics of a high performance school environment and why it matters, biophilic design, trauma responsive design (also called trauma informed design), and features that support special needs students, among others.

[Free Webinar] Schools That Heal: Design with Mental Health in Mind
[Free Webinar] Drinking Water Safety and Health in Schools

1 HSW LU

Too many public schools look and feel like prisons, but we know that nurturing environments are better for learning. Research consistently shows that access to nature, big classroom windows, and open campuses reduce stress, anxiety, disorderly conduct, and crime, and improve academic performance. But too few school designers and decision-makers apply this research to create healthy schools. In her book, Schools That Heal, Claire details the myriad opportunities—from furniture to classroom improvements to whole campus renovations—to make supportive learning environments for our children and teenagers.

In this webinar, experts from American Heart Association will talk about the importance of safe drinking water and how the proper policies can build a culture of health in our schools.

Because children spend so much time at school, having safe and appealing water available to them is critical. When children don’t have enough water to drink, their health and their cognitive performance may suffer. And, when water is not available, children tend to consume more sugary drinks, which are linked to chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease. All kids should have access to water at no charge in school.

[Free Webinar] Passive House in Schools

1 HSW LU

In this webinar, you’ll learn how the Passive House concept has been applied to schools, and how available building components can help design teams meet the requirements of CHPS criteria and Passive House design.
