This article will expand upon the idea of energy positive buildings by providing a couple of real-world examples, the Powerhouses Kjørbo and Brattørkaia both located in Norway. Although they were developed in a relatively rapid sequence and within a similar time frame, these projects feature slightly different approaches to sustainable methods of energy generation. To gain a full understanding of how these buildings operate, these sustainable efforts will be outlined in detail and their impacts to the power grid of Norway will also be explored. Finally, this will also go over what designers have learned from the construction of these buildings – though the initial plans were sound, architects constantly use previous projects to amend any problems they found during construction or reuse an idea that worked especially well.

What you will lean

  • Recognize the aspects that make the Kjørbo and Brattørkaia power houses unique
  • Learn how each powerhouse operates in terms of sustainability
  • Become familiar with the impacts of these powerhouses on Norway’s energy grid
  • Describe what designers have learned from these projects that can be implemented into future designs
