Construction Management at Risk (CMaR) is an increasingly popular project delivery method that is becoming very prevalent in my region of work, especially with horizontal/ heavy civil projects. CMaR has recently been approved as a federal procurement project delivery method by several federal agencies. CMaR also is a misunderstood and misapplied project delivery method that can cause needless costs and time delays. While the Design- Build project delivery method is defined by the Design- Build Institute, who defines the CMaR project delivery method? Are CMaR and CM/ GC the same or are they mutually exclusive project delivery methods? We’ll look at what I believe makes a CMaR project delivery method unique and how to utilize it for maximum effectiveness. Additionally, we’ll look at where to find the best information and resources for CMaR projects, especially the underrepresented horizontal/ heavy civil projects.
